"Painting is a part of me. I can't be without it.”

Get to know Andreas Johansson

Andreas Johansson was born in 1968 and grew up in Luleå. Today, Andreas lives and works both in Österlen with a studio at the top of Bästekille Backar and in the north where he creates in his studio on a family farm in the small village of Gran, which is high up with the inland forest behind and a view of the valley where the Kågeälven flows.

Andreas has always created images, from the beginning with the camera in his hand and then replacing it with brushes and oil paints.

For over thirty years, he has transferred his feelings to canvases, but only in 2020 did he choose to invest fully in art.

Andreas mainly paints in oil or acrylic. He chooses a color scale according to how the winds blow in his inner emotional landscape.

When he paints in the studio in the special light at Österlen, his paintings are characterized by the walks along the beaches and the sense of freedom he gets from the wide views. Light takes on a central role. While Norrland's forests draw him to the mustier color scale where nature is close.

With the colors, Andreas connects his thoughts and feelings, to create the experimental works that can be perceived as fantasies captured on the large canvases.

When he takes a brush in his hand, time and space disappear. His painting is colored by the tones pouring out of the speakers and he lets them guide him through the process of the artistic practice where he explores, discovers and develops. He gives no name to his works, sets no frames, but leaves it to the viewer to experience the paintings, to sift them through their own personal layers of all that makes them unique.

It is a language without words that is more reminiscent of listening to the notes of a beautiful piece of music or falling in love - it is something big and captivating that is felt, but difficult to put into words.

"The images come to me, I see them with my inner eye. Like a glimpse of another world.

Sometimes I only understand afterwards what I have painted.”

"The energy flows in time with the music. Quick hands sweep the brush across the canvas... The scent of linseed oil and balsamic turpentine fills the studio. The sensuality of the oil paint's buttery texture and distinct scent is an experience for both body and soul. Andreas paints intuitively, follows his impulses. He shows you pictures of his landscapes, both the interior and exterior.

Nature - with all the revelations he had in the dark forests of Norrland, in the rushing rivers of the wilderness and in the light along the long shores of Österlen - is his never-ending source of inspiration.

"Daring to feel everything. Be weak. Be strong. Have confidence. Feel sadness. Feel missing.

The longing to be a child. Without demands. Without responsibility.”

"The paintings are made up of Andrea's innermost feelings. He lives to create them. The meditative process of painting is pure love and when he finishes a work, he keeps it close to his heart. But he does not give it a name, does not set any frames, but leaves it to viewers to experience the paintings, to sift them through their own personal layers of all that makes them them.

Abstract landscapes and forms where the eye is free to interpret them based on its own world view. Perhaps the paintings can be of comfort to someone, awaken a longing in someone else? What the subject is is determined by the person who rests their gaze on them. There is no right and there is no wrong. No truth that can describe them in a single pithy sentence.

It's a language without words, more like listening to the notes of a beautiful piece of music or falling in love – it's something big and captivating that's felt, but hard to put into words."
